“Right here,” Julian said, pointing to the spot they’d picked out on the iron vein. “It’s still the best spot, I think, and it eliminates variables. We know the drill didn’t break because of where it was, so it’s best to put it in the same location again.” He gripped the item in his inventory and tried to get the holographic image to go where he was placing it. It was still tricky to place these things precisely, but he was determined to figure out how he could get it to become a smooth process.

During his attempt to place it, he noticed a couple times the hologram turned red. It was every time it swept over Ryne. As much as he wanted to test what that meant - he was reasonably certain it would give him an error there was a living being in the way that was stopping him from placing it - he couldn’t be one hundred percent positive it wouldn’t give him some kind of ‘organic deconstruction commencing’ message before doing terrible things to the Aelif.

He let it go, and the drill materialized. They’d loaded his inventory belt with the tallow and coal before he left, and now they filled the drill with those items with some additional water Ryne had gathered while they were waiting for the drill to finish and while Julian had gathered stone for the furnace.

“Okay, so what I don’t get is...the furnace. We’re putting it out here?” Ryne asked.

“I had an idea and added one more thing to the array. Check it out.” After placing the furnace, he held up the hologram with one hand and a finger to tell Ryne he was doing something and needed a minute with the other. This one was both easier and harder to place. It was red everywhere at first, but when he got it near when he needed it to go, it snapped into place and lost the red tint.

“It’s a chute!” she exclaimed as the new device materialized into place.

“Yeah. These iron sheets are about twelve pounds. But they stack up to one twenty-four in my inventory belt. Iron Ore gets me about three pounds to stack up to the same. So if we smelt it on sight, we can transport three times the iron as we do the sheets.”

Ryne nodded excitedly. “So a full pouch gets us three full pouches worth instead. And it also means you can craft the boiler and steam engine out here without having to go into town and facing my sister’s wrath because you’re still scared she’ll yell at you. It’s brilliant.”

“Um...thanks?” Julian blinked. “I wasn’t trying to avoid Kurli.”

Ryne waved her hand. “Of course you were. Everyone tries to avoid my sister when she’s mad because she threatens to shoot them with arrows. It really does put a damper on things. She’s never threatened to shoot me, but I think that’s because she can ground me instead. She’ll probably threaten to shoot me once I’m too old to ground.
